Reasons to Love Greece

March 25 is Independence Day in Greece – a celebration of the Greek Revolution in the 1820’s and breaking free from Ottoman Rule.

So of course we bring you, the Top 3 Reasons to Love Greece.

First
It’s the Birthplace of Big Ideas

  • They gave us democracy, so citizens could argue their way to decisions rather than simply obeying them – though certain autocrats around the world are currently trying to push back so let’s dig in folks as it’s the best we have
  • They invented much of Western philosophy, from Socrates’ awkward questions to Aristotle’s system‑building
  • And I suggest the advanced mathematics, science and medicine, that help us turn hunches into hypotheses and evidence.

2nd
They gave us Stories That Still Shape Us

  • Greek myths gave us Zeus, Athena, Odysseus, and a whole dysfunctional divine family that still powers books, films and games.
  • Tragedy and comedy were refined on the Athenian stage, where playwrights probed power, pride and human folly.
  • Heroes, monsters and moral dilemmas from Greek epics still provide the template for modern storytelling.

No.3
The Art of Living Well

  • Architecture from the Parthenon onwards set the visual language for beauty, balance and proportion.
  • The Olympic Games turned sport into a celebration of excellence, competition and shared identity.
  • Food, sea, light and philoxenia (a wonderful Greek saying which means hospitality and friendship to strangers) together model a slower, more human pace of life the rest of us are still trying to copy.

    Happy Independence Day to Greece
